Approaching Manchester, NH, By Bus

Manchester looking kind of idyllic when I passed throgh on Wednesday. I thought, I could live here. I've never thought that before, I can assure you. This was the first leg of my grand tour, stopping in Boston, Providence, my hometown of Brockton, Mass., and then back home.

Tunbridge Fair Ferris Wheel

I've been negligent about this blog, as of late. Life has gotten in the way. Gerard Holmes sending me 60 seconds of ferris wheel footage from the Tunbridge Fair in Vermont was like a poke in the ribs, seeing as how my last clip was shot from a ferris wheel in Brooklyn.

Thanks, G. I love a country fair.

Walk to Fishing Pier

MUNI thwarted my plans to hit the beach, today. I went, instead, for a walk along Lake Merced. I never take that walk without taking the path that leads down to the little fishing pier. It's difficult to believe a place like this exists within the city limits.

I spent the morning and early afternoon at the pool. It was empty when I got there. As the hours went by, families started showing up, many with kids. While the morning sound was birdsong, the afternoon sound was that of kids frolicking.

Freeway

Kristine took O and Z on a geocache adventure with their friend, O2. This is Ophelia Artinian's submission, which isn't even close to 60 seconds long, but Ophelia isn't yet 11 yars old, so I'll cut her some slack. She wanted us to see how excited she, her sister, and their friend were to be walking on a foot bridge over the freeway. L.A. kids get excited over the strangest things.

Strikers

Bay Area Rapid Transit went on strike, this morning. This meant chaos for a lot of straphangers. These folks deserve a fair wage and to have their safety concerns met. I hope their action results in positive change. I'm not a huge union fan, but I give them props for doing what they feel is right and demanding justice.

The Carrousel

Another summer evening in Edmonton, Festival City. There are dozens of festivals celebrating music, art, theatre, and ethnic groups every year, both summer and winter. Summers are particularly festive, with different events every week, many overlapping. This is The Carrousel, an instillation at The Works Art and Design Festival. It was created by a trio of Quebec artists called BGL, and it is made from recycled fences and shopping carts. And it's human powered!

Hanging with Jean at Yerba Buena Gardens

Just shy of 60 seconds of my little friend and birthday biddy, Jean. There may or may not have been some dipping of bare feet in the fountain.

After a week in the Bay Area, Kristine headed home to L.A., making a few stops on the way. This was one of them - the spot where she and Edward were married 13+ years ago. In true kid fashion,  Ophelia and Zabel decided that a contemplative maze made for a competitive challenge.

Cloud Chamber

The tracks of sub-atomic particles are captured as they leave condensation trails in a cloud chamber. The "rain" is condensing alcohol, and the particle source is a small button of americium-241. Most of the trails are probably alpha particles, others are cosmic rays and stray particles from background radiation.

The Pride flags are out in full force in SF. I find SF Pride to be kind of lame and dopey, if you really want to know the truth. I don't take part in any of the festivities, which are mostly about promoting gay-friendly brand names. I do love a flag blowing in the wind, though.

This guy was playing the Batman theme when I got off the bus, then he segued into The Odd Couple, and I thought it would be wrong not to get a clip. Afterwards, when I put a couple of bucks in his cup, he asked why I'd filmed. I told him I knew a guy who was a real Odd Couple enthusiast. He said, "That guy must be good people." Then he told me his name was Rodney Byrd, "Spelled like the Admiral, not the Celtic."

7 Seconds of Yo Yo Chris

This is only 7 seconds, and this is going to be way more than 60 words, but I have to post it. I stepped off my first bus, this morning, and encountered a 50ish guy having a great time playing with a yo yo, on the corner of Judah and 46th ave. Not just any yo yo, but a Duncan Imperial.  Anyone who knows me well knows that I almost always have a yo yo with me, and that it's always a Duncan Imperial. You don't run into yo yo enthusiasts every day. I stopped and said, "Hey - I love a yo yo guy!" He smiled said, "Thanks..I AM a yo yo guy." I said, "And you have a Duncan Imperial. I never go anywhere without mine. I pulled mine out of my backpack, and Yo Yo guy, who looked really happy to have found a fellow yo yo lover said, "Cool! Would you like an extra string, just in case?" "I'd love an extra string, just in case," I answered. He proceeded to pull a little Moleskin book out of his back pocket. Between the pages were various colors of yo yo string. He gave me a green one. When I asked if I could film him for a bit, he was more than happy to oblige.  Then he introduced himself and we shook hands, and I had to catch the express bus, and be on my way.

Thanks for making my day, YoYo Chris on 46th and Judah! And thanks for the extra string, just in case.

WPA mural

The building which houses my favorite coffee and brunch spot in SF has a beautiful WPA mural. I have coffee at this place just about once a week, but I never get tired of looking at the mural, or the wonderful mosaic tiling.

Beach Horses

Had the day off, and spent a chunk of it at the ocean. Perfect thing to do in the middle of the week.  watched the mounted police giving their horses some exercise.

Creaky Branch

Wishbone shaped branch has been hanging and rocking since the "Halloween" storm of 2011.  Hurricane Sandy had nothing on this sucker.  Landlord can't deal.  I hope no one is underneath when it brings the branch it's killing (softly) down.

The Wheels on the Bus

This project is forcing me to take note of just how much time I spend riding buses, especially around Lake Merced, which has got to be the prettiest bus route in SF.

Cobb Salad

This place makes the best Cobb salad.I'm not sure if the person behind the counter is a man or a woman. I wish they wore name tags. With my luck, his/her name is Leslie, anyhow.

Judah

I wait for the bus on this corner every work day. It's bleak and depressing. I've seen lots of ugliness here: fights, public drunkenness, people vomiting, public drug use by young people with children. On the flip side, it's also just a few hundred yards from beautiful Ocean Beach, and there are often surfers and nice old ladies.

Dissonance

So, this is a thing for buskers, these days. Play some nice, prerecorded music over a loudspeaker and once in a while, play a few notes on an instrument. The notes may or may not have anything to do with the music. You may or may not know how to actually play said instrument. This is a thing.

Work

One thing I love about cities is that one gets to see people doing all sorts of work. What constitutes "work" for me is so different than it is for other people. Most of my "work" involves writing and thinking. These guys break their backs for the rest of us. Thank God for them.

Still in Hollywood

We were in Hollywood this afternoon, so I took a minor detour home so I could :60 the Hollywood Sign.

Walking in the Snow

I was following my husband and kid in the snow as we walked to the car in the alley. We live in Chicago, and it had snowed earlier in the day.

Uh-Oh

My daughter just woke up from a very long nap, and she was in a pretty good mood. She started making this face that looks a lot like a toothless old man this week, and "Uh-oh" is the only thing she says on request. It's new.

Ham Salad and Lays Potato Chips

I've seen Tyson and Tim on this corner since 2006, when I first started working here. We talk just about every day. They're more neighbors to me than anyone who lives in my building. Really decent guys. I asked if I could include them, since they're definitely part of my day. They were happy to oblige.

Poached

I forgot that I took my stove apart to clean it, last night.  Had to scramble (no pun intended) to get two burners up and running just so I could make breakfast. I make the best poached eggs. Stovetop coffee is the only way to go.

Strange Bedfellows

My husband never believes me that these two are affectionate to each other most of the time.
Also I listen to the Ramones on loop while I'm cleaning.  I think the cats like it too.

One Person's Trash....

Kid 1 got a new roadside desk last week. Kid 2 was very envious.
The universe was listening and proffered this today.

Riding to Walgreen's

Everything is at least a bus ride away from me. Running out of rubber cement in the middle of a project meant taking two buses into "town." At least it's mostly a scenic ride.

Child Doing Homework

It's almost 10 pm and she's hashing out her essay on teens and adults sharing responsibility for their technology habits.  She knew she was on camera, and she keeps getting livelier.  The half hour nap before she started knocking this out has helped.

Morning One, and A Cat

Pat Kiernan is a NYC treasure, I can't say the same for my cat or the traffic reporter.
The subway has never rocked or rolled that I can recall. The cat's still my favorite though.

A Girl and Her Dog

Child is feeling better--enough to get Dixie to try a few tricks for the camera.
Dixie's a rescue, and spends most of the day sleeping, but seems to get pretty excited about food.

Dinner

This is dinner, tonight. Smashed potatoes, blackened catfish, and broccoli.  Both my husband and my daughter are sick, and he spent the entire day downstairs trying to stay away from me.  And the kid had school then orchestra.  By the time she got home, I just wanted to spend time with them, sick or not.

Morning Ritual

"I'm not getting up til 7:30."
"You're gonna be cutting it close."
"I'm good at that."
"Well I'm gonna make coffee."
Also, I need to buy more Bustelo.
